Commentary on the current state of BoP  
Is Gail Simone attempting to also comment on the state of the book through the voice of Babs? Reading Babs' monologue, it reflects upon a feeling that I got from the writing of Judomaster and Gypsy: Neither is around long enough for the reader to see a strong personality, coming across as very generic background characters, easily replaced; this issue has been noticed in reviews of the book as well. "This...this new thing, the new Birds of Prey, I don't even know if it's going to work." That line, from Babs, sounds much like an author in turmoil; it is also, I believe, the first time someone has seriously referred to the team as the Birds of Prey.

And to be honest, I don't really know if the removal of Dinah from BoP was a partial/pure editorial mandate, or simply a natural progression that happened to coincide with her appearance in the new JLA run. Reading Metzer writing Dinah is jarring as compared to the Dinah that was seen leaving BoP, focused on raising Sin. From what I've read Dinah comes across as pre-Shiva training, which really doesn't jive with me.

Heck, if one wanted to stretch a bit, the appearance of Misfit could be indicative of something. I don't know it's ever been officially stated if she was to act as a reader avatar, but if one can continue to assume such, what does it say? Is Gail still going to attempt to invoke/involve her readers directly in the book?

I'm not really sure of the answers here, but the idea makes me wonder.

This is a constant problem with continuity, which is why I've dropped a lot of my comics in the post reset world. Why does DC think anyone cares about continuity? I read BoP, I don't read JLA, so I don't care about Dinah in JLA. I care about Dinah in BoP. Do they think readers aren't intelligent enough to understand that this is fiction and that great characters can exist in multiple storylines? Marvel understands that. Manga writers understand that. What is the problem with DC, why do they constantly strive for continuity that is impossible to maintain anyway?

I'm quite a continuity geek, and yet I mostly agree with you. If Dinah had stayed on BoP and JLA, that would have been fine (although if she also tried to raise Sin, there would have to be stories addressing that conflict). But one of the things about JLA is that most of the time, the team members also operate solo or with other teams. And I don't think readers have a problem with that. Sometimes neither does DC- in the letters page of some Batman comic someone once asked how Batman could be this shadowy urban legend in his own book while running around in the very public and high-profile Justice League over in JLA. The response was essentially "we know, but we think it's nice to be able to tell both sorts of stories, so please let us get away with it". I rather liked that (especially since they directly admitted it, while Marvel's letters pages recently have taken on an obnoxiously disingenuous tone).

Continuity should be a fun thing that ads depth for long-time readers, without dragging the story or characterization down. It's a tricky balance that's hard to get right.

I do have problems with some of Marvel's continuity bits, primarily the over-exposed Wolverine being a member of all three X-Men teams *and* the New Avengers *and* in his solo title for a while there. This could be fine, except that most of these titles interact, which starts to really stretch suspension of disbelief. If you're going to go with loose continuity, do it with stories that don't explicitly rely on happening simultaneously while featuring the same character in different places (JLA/whatever can usually get away with this, because of less direct interaction).

It's an interesting question that I'm not sure can/will be answered: Was Dinah leaving planned anyway, or did Metzer get her exclusively? I'd seriously love to know, because the way BoP is being written, it makes one wonder. It could just be a natural evolution for the character, because it would make sense given her taking up Sin. I think there's a strong case for: "This was going to happen anyway, and it was coincidence JLA had Dinah in it."

But then there's the flipside where if it was a continuity/editorial thing, we've now got one Dinah voice from Metzer that's nothing like the Dinah who left the BoP, and the whole thing's just silly. Thus we get Babs' frustration at the whole thing being a reflection of Gail's viewpoint.

I'm personally not big on continuity if good writing or a good book is going to be sacrificed on its altar. Otherwise, I let it be.
